Each student is responsible for taking on a project in the field school this year. Listed below are the projects being completed and the students who will be working on them. The project descriptions are just a basis for what they will entail. Throughout the term projects may slightly change or have additions made to them.
Photography:
Nikki will be taking photos of the site and artifacts found in the current and past years. Many artifacts in the collection will be photographed to scale.
Video:
Sepideh is working on creating a short five minute video that will explain the Seymour Valley Archaeology Project, and it will be released for public viewing when it is completed.
Line Drawings and Sketches:
Ali will be sketching some artifacts chosen by our project director, and she will also be walking around the site while people are working to sketch them.
Ofuro:
Alyssa's task is to create a detailed description and sketch of the ofuro from multiple angles. By taking measurements she will be able to draw a sketch to scale. The goal of the project is to have enough information about the ofuro on the McKenzie Creek site to compare to other Japanese-American sites.
Rock Feature:
Similar to the ofuro, Mitch will be describing the rock feature that was proposed by Bob to be the possible base of a shrine. He will also be taking measurements and producing sketches from many angles with the same goal as the ofuro, to be used as a comparison for other Japanese-American sites.
Wooden Features:
There are three wooden features to be studied at the McKenzie Creek site. Aza is responsible for examining the cedar plank road, skid road, and a wooden platform north of the ofuro. A diagram of every plank of wood on all three features will be created, along with a description and measurements. One goal of this project is to understand the purpose of the wooden platform.
Plants on the Site:
Kirsten will be mapping out the vegetation found on the site. The map will be used to make an educated guess of how the land was culturally used in specific areas, and to predict what can be found beneath the surface.
Lantern Glass, Industrial Artifacts and Stoves:
Angus will be studying saws, tools, stoves and lantern glass found in the current and previous years on the McKenzie Creek site. A description of all items will be created, and a minimum number of lanterns present on the site will be given with their approximate locations.
Surface Bottle Glass:
Phoenix will examine all bottles found in previous years and this field season, with the goal of identifying the different types and a minimum number of bottles.
Buttons and Garters:
Rohan is giving a thorough description of buttons and garters, he will be classifying and hopefully dating them.
Tableware:
Fazila will be examining and describing the collection of ceramic dishes, with the goal of comparing them to other Japanese-American sites.
Artifact Catalog:
The big job of cataloguing all artifacts into a master list will be done by Harman. She will try to find every artifact in the collection and identify if we still have it.
Artifact Research:
Three students will be focused on researching specific artifacts. Bob will be giving Siobhan, Allyah and Shaunti different artifacts from the collection, and their task is to find out as much information as they can about it.
Waste Audit and Historically Culturally Modified Trees (HCMT):
Karoline is collecting garbage from the project and student lunches to study how much waste is being created. She will also be looking at and describing old growth stumps on the McKenzie Creek site, and mapping out their locations.
Blog:
I will be publishing a blog post every day, Monday to Thursday from May 6th to June 20th. You can find out more information about me here.
